CASyM and the road to Systems Medicine

CASyM is tasked with formulating a European wide implementation strategy (road map) for Systems Medicine. This new and innovative concept integrates multiple disciplines, whereas a significant part of this is clinical medicine, from clinical trials through public health and medical economics. The CASyM road map is driven by clinical needs: It aims to identify areas where a systems approach will address clinical questions and solve clinical problems.

Key components of this strategy are:

  • Engagement of all relevant stakeholders
  • Development of multidisciplinary training concepts
  • Assessment of methodological and technological challenges
  • Strengthening innovation activities
  • Professional dissemination concepts
  • Analysis of instruments for the implementation of research programs
  • Creating and shaping a sustainable European community of Systems Medicine

Coordinating Systems Medicine across Europe

On 29 November 2012 the CASyM consortium organized its first stakeholder meeting, the EU/CASyM joint workshop, at the Club of the University Foundation in Brussels, Belgium. This event was the successor of a series of workshops organized by the European Commission, Directorate of Health, with the aim to assess a European wide implementation strategy for Systems Medicine and to formulate a strategic road map for this purpose (Brussels: 14-15 June, 2010; 28 June, 2012).

In this regard, the CASyM initiative will actually continue the initiated road mapping process to build an overarching European concept for Systems Medicine.

To start identifying elements for the actual road map, CASyM invited 20 leading European experts with the aim to (1) present the CASyM concept to a broader community, (2) to initiate fruitful future collaborations and (3) to continue a focused discussion about a sustainable Systems Medicine implementation strategy for Europe. Invited stakeholders were chosen to represent relevant EC projects as well as the clinical and Systems Biology community.

The following topics were addressed (see also EU/CASyM joint workshop concept):

  • Systems Medicine road map development
  • Novel training concepts
  • Joint efforts
  • Dissemination and sustainability
